How we pick. One pick per level, from the top of its ENERGY STAR range: 25–30 pints when damp, 35–40 when very damp, and 45–50 when wet. Each is sold by a store we link to. The lowest yearly energy use wins, then the higher efficiency. Stores never pay for a place.

The same three ranges as 1,000 sq ft. Each cost applies the average home electricity price in the United States to the median EPA yearly energy of the certified portables in the range.

Questions
What people ask before buying
Does 1,500 sq ft need more than 1,000?
Not by the ENERGY STAR table. It gives the same ranges for any space under 2,000 sq ft, so below that line dampness sets the size, not the area.
ENERGY STAR sizing guidance, read Oct 5, 2026How do I tell damp from very damp?
By a hygrometer reading, or by what you see. A space that smells musty now and then is damp, at 50–75%. Damp spots on walls or floor make it very damp, at 75–90%. Sweating walls or seepage make it wet, at 90–100%.
ENERGY STAR sizing guidance, read Oct 5, 2026How much more does a wet space cost than a damp one?
About $41 a year more at the U.S. average price. A typical certified 30–50 pint portable uses 507 kWh a year, against 285 for a 20–30 pint one, by the EPA medians.
