Questions
Dew point questions
Short answers, with where they come from.
What is the dew point?
The National Weather Service defines it as “the temperature to which air must be cooled in order to reach saturation”. The higher it is, the more water the air holds.
NWS glossary, read Oct 5, 2026Does dew point mean 100% humidity?
At the dew point, yes: the air is saturated, so its relative humidity is 100%.
NWS glossary · National Weather Service, vapor pressure formula, read Oct 5, 2026What does a dew point of 70 mean?
A dew point of 70°F sits in the top band of the scale: lots of moisture in the air, becoming oppressive. That band starts at 65°F. Above 55°F and below 65°F, it gets sticky, with muggy evenings. At 55°F or less, the air feels dry and comfortable.
National Weather Service, Dew Point vs Humidity, read Oct 5, 2026Why does the dew point matter in a basement?
Walls and pipes below ground are often cooler than the air. If they are colder than the dew point of the surrounding air, water forms on them. The humidity by city tool shows each month’s outdoor dew point near you.
NWS glossary · NOAA normalsHow is it calculated?
With the NWS vapor pressure formula, solved for the dew point. The air’s vapor pressure is its relative humidity times the saturation pressure at its temperature. The dew point is the temperature at which that vapor pressure saturates the air.
