How we pick. Certified portable models rated 45–50 pints a day. That’s the top of the range ENERGY STAR suggests for a wet space. Each one is sold by a store we link to. One pick per need: a Wi-Fi app, no app, and sold by the brand. Within each need, the lowest yearly energy use wins, then the higher efficiency. A Wi-Fi app comes first here, since you won’t see the unit’s display. Stores never pay for a place.

Other crawl space units, and the number in their names
AlorAir and Argendon sell more crawl space units than their four on the EPA list. Our sources publish no figures for the others. Before you compare any of them, know that the number in a model’s name isn’t its rating.
The name versus the EPA rating
-
AlorAir Sentinel Pro35XEPA: 21 pints a day
-
AlorAir Helios D35EPA: 24 pints a day
-
AlorAir Sentinel HD55SEPA: 36 pints a day
-
Argendon Sandidry Pro35CEPA: 21 pints a day
EPA ratings are taken at 65°F and 60% humidity. Before 2019 the test ran at 80°F, and the EPA puts an old 70-pint unit at about 40–45 pints today. Some listings also quote pints “at saturation”, in air that can’t hold more water. No federal rating uses it.

Ask the seller for the IEF
The integrated energy factor is the liters of water a unit removes per kWh, rated the same way for every brand. Certified 45–50 pint portables in this guide run from 2.01 to 2.24 L/kWh. Without that figure, you can’t compare a unit with them.

Questions
What people ask before buying
Is it worth putting a dehumidifier in a crawl space?
In a sealed crawl space, yes. The Department of Energy’s Building America guide shows one keeping a sealed crawl space dry. It also lists a dehumidifier that stopped working among the causes of moisture problems.
The same guide calls relative humidity above 70% bad. In a vented crawl space, moisture problems must be dealt with before sealing and insulating.
The humidity by city tool shows how humid each month gets near you.
DOE Building America Solution Center, Look at Crawlspace for Moisture Issues, updated Sep 10, 2025What’s the fastest way to dry out a crawl space?
Get the water out, then dry what got wet within a day or two. The EPA says wet materials dried within 24–48 hours usually won’t grow mold. If a large pool sits there, the DOE’s Building America guide says not to go in. Call a professional to remove it.
Then find the source. The guide’s signs include puddles, water stains, a white powdery crust on concrete walls, damp insulation, and rusty pipes and nails.
DOE Building America Solution Center, Look at Crawlspace for Moisture Issues, updated Sep 10, 2025 · EPA, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home, updated Feb 18, 2026What size for a crawl space?
ENERGY STAR sizes by area and dampness, not by room. Under 2,000 sq ft, it suggests 20–30 pints a day if the space smells musty now and then. Damp spots on walls or floor call for 25–40, and walls that sweat or water that seeps in for 30–50. Above 2,000 sq ft, the table moves to 30+, 40+, or 50+.
ENERGY STAR sizing guidance, read Oct 5, 2026What does a crawl space unit cost to run?
The EPA’s yearly estimate for certified 45–50 pint portables runs from 438 to 530 kWh, 520 at the median. That’s $95 a year at the U.S. average price and $250 in Hawaii, the most expensive state.
Of the 156, 14 have a Wi-Fi app, which lets you read the humidity without crawling in.
