Best dehumidifier for a basement: what size, and our picks

Basements run cool, and many have no drain close by. Size the unit for how wet yours gets, then plan where the water goes.

How we pick

How we pick. Certified portable models rated 45–50 pints a day, the top of the range ENERGY STAR suggests for this basement. Each one is sold by a store we link to. One pick per need: no app, a Wi-Fi app, and sold by the brand. Within each need, the lowest yearly energy use wins, then the higher efficiency. Stores never pay for a place.

Questions

What people ask before buying

How much does it cost to run a basement dehumidifier?

A certified 45–50 pint model uses about 520 kWh a year, the median of 156 models. At July 2026 home electricity prices, that’s about $66 a year in Louisiana, $95 at the U.S. average, and $250 in Hawaii.

Your use can be higher or lower than the EPA’s estimate. Set your state in the calculator to see your own figure.

Will a dehumidifier get rid of mold?

A dehumidifier lowers the humidity that mold needs to grow. It does not remove mold that is already there. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally 30–50%. For sizing a room where growth has already appeared, see the dehumidifier for mold guide.

EPA, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home
Do I need a dehumidifier with a pump?

Only if water can’t drain by gravity. With a floor drain lower than the unit, a hose is enough. Without one, a built-in pump pushes the water up and out, for example to a sink.

Check the pump lift, in feet: it has to reach your drain. If the maker doesn’t publish it, ask the seller. With a pump or without compares the two setups.

What size dehumidifier do I need for a basement?

It depends on how damp the space is. Under 2,000 sq ft, the EPA suggests 20–30 pints a day for a slightly damp room and 25–40 for a very damp one. When walls sweat or water seeps in, it suggests 30–50. Above 2,000 sq ft, the ranges start at 30, 40, or 50 pints, with no upper limit. The 1,000 sq ft guide works it through for a mid-size basement.

Walls sweat when they are colder than the dew point of the surrounding air. The dew point calculator gives yours from a thermometer and a hygrometer reading.

Capacities on this site use the Department of Energy’s 2019 test, the figure the EPA lists. A rating made before 2019 may not match.

What months should I run a basement dehumidifier?

Mostly June through September. Brought to a 65°F basement, outdoor air tops 60% humidity, the EPA’s ceiling, in July at 79% of the 445 NOAA stations we use. In January, only 4% do.

Your own season may be shorter or longer, and a warmer basement shortens it. The humidity by city tool counts the months for each station. Keep a hygrometer down there too, since leaks and seepage don’t follow the calendar.

Should I leave a basement dehumidifier on all the time?

Yes, with the humidistat doing the work. Set it within the EPA’s 30–50% range, and the unit switches itself on and off to hold that level.

Expect long runs in the humid months above and short ones in winter. Going below what you need only adds hours.
