Questions
Running cost questions
Short answers, with where they come from.
How much electricity does a dehumidifier use?
It depends on the size. By the EPA’s estimate, a certified portable rated 41 to 52 pints uses 519 kWh a year at the median. One rated up to 25 pints uses 282 kWh.
EPA list, Oct 15, 2026What does it cost to run one 24 hours a day for a month?
About $65 at the U.S. average price, for a 50-pint unit that never stops. That assumes it removes its full 50 pints a day, as in the federal test at 65°F and 60% humidity. At the median efficiency of certified models of 41 to 52 pints, 2.01 liters per kWh, that takes 11.8 kWh a day.
In real use the humidistat stops it once the room reaches your setting. For the same size, the EPA’s yearly estimate is 519 kWh at the median.
10 CFR 430, Appendix X1, as of Jan 1, 2025 · EPA list, Oct 15, 2026 · EIA, July 2026Why is my bill different from this estimate?
The EPA figure assumes a typical use. A unit in a wet basement runs longer; one in a dry month barely runs. Your electricity price can also differ from your state’s average, and some utilities charge more at peak hours.
EPA list, Oct 15, 2026 · EIA, July 2026Does a more efficient model pay for itself?
Rarely by much within one size. At the U.S. average price, the thriftiest certified portable of 41 to 52 pints costs $18 a year less to run than the hungriest. Your state’s price weighs more than the model.
