Small dehumidifier: the smallest certified sizes, and our picks

The ENERGY STAR® table starts at 20 pints a day. Certified units go smaller, and mini units sit outside the program.

How we pick

How we pick. Certified portable models rated 20–25 pints a day. That’s the smallest size the ENERGY STAR table suggests. Each one is sold by a store we link to. One pick per need: no app, EPA Most Efficient, and a Wi-Fi app. Within each need, the lowest yearly energy use wins, then the higher efficiency. Stores never pay for a place.

Questions

What people ask before buying

How small do certified dehumidifiers get?

The EPA lists 61 certified portables rated under 20 pints a day, 20 of them at 10 pints or under. The ENERGY STAR table doesn’t suggest those sizes for any room, which is why the picks here start at 20 pints.

Do mini dehumidifiers work?

The certified list can’t tell you, because they aren’t on it. The program’s definition, taken from federal rules, is a refrigerated unit. It has a cold coil that condenses moisture, a refrigerating system with an electric motor, a fan, and a way to collect the water.

Mini units built another way, such as thermoelectric ones, don’t match that description. None is certified, so none has an EPA figure to compare.

Is 20 pints too much for a small room?

Not by the ENERGY STAR table. It has no row under 20 pints, and it says it’s better to oversize than undersize. A room that feels damp all the time moves up to 25–40.

What does a small unit cost to run?

The 151 certified 20–25 pint models use 242 to 314 kWh a year. At the median, 285 kWh, that’s about $52 a year at the U.S. average and $36 in Louisiana.
