How long do dehumidifiers last?

Long enough that the unit you replace may predate today’s ratings, which changed in 2019.

The short answer

About 11 years for a portable and 19 for a whole-house unit, on average, by the Department of Energy’s estimate. It’s a mean across many homes, not a promise for one machine.

  • The warranty is the one figure a maker commits to: ask for it.
  • Check who filed the model: brands share filing companies.
  • 18 dehumidifier recalls at the CPSC since 2001.

The DOE estimate

The figure comes from the Department of Energy. When it set today’s efficiency standards, in a final rule of June 13, 2016, it needed a lifetime to weigh energy savings against price. Its analysis gave a mean of about 11 years for portable dehumidifiers and about 19 for whole-house units.

  • About 11 years

    Portable

Mean lifetime in the DOE’s analysis.

  • About 19 years

    Whole-house

Installed on ducts, rated with its own test.

The rule doesn’t break that mean down by how many hours a unit runs each year.

Cold is one known strain. ENERGY STAR® notes that below 65°F, frost can form on the coils and make the compressor cycle on and off repeatedly. For a cool basement, ask the seller down to what temperature the unit keeps working, and how it handles frost.

Warranty

The warranty is the one lifetime figure a maker commits to. Our sources don’t publish it: the EPA list has no warranty field. Ask the seller how long it lasts, and which parts it covers, compressor included.

Who files it

The name on the box is often not the company that built it. The EPA list names the company that filed each model: 130 brands come from 74 companies. Each model page on this site shows that company, under “Filed by”. The who-makes-what tool lists every brand it files.

It matters for service and parts, and for recalls, which name the maker as well as the brands.

The list is also recent. Of its 482 models, 469 came on the market in 2025 or later, so none of them has a long track record yet.

Recalls

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has published 18 dehumidifier recalls since 2001. In 17 of them, the hazard named is a fire. The latest, dated Aug 16, 2023, covers about 1.56 million units.

When an old unit is still running

An older unit can still work, and the DOE’s lifetime is only an average. Two checks are worth the time:

  1. Its model number against the recallsIn the recall check, then on cpsc.gov.
  2. Its rating, on today’s scaleBefore 2019, capacity was rated at 80°F, so an old “70-pint” unit matches about 40–45 pints today, the EPA says.

When you replace it, size the new one with today’s figures, and compare running costs in your state.
