ComparisonTwo drain setups

Dehumidifier with pump vs without

By Julien Fourel · How we compare

The short answer

1Choose a pump if

  • no drain sits lower than the unit: a pump lifts the water, for example to a laundry sink.
  • you can’t empty a bucket every day, in a crawl space or a basement you rarely visit.
  • the drain is across the room or up a step: check that the pump lift covers the height.

2Skip the pump if

  • a floor drain or sump sits below the unit: ENERGY STAR® describes a hose run to it.
  • you’re in the room every day: the bucket shuts the unit off when it’s full, ENERGY STAR says.
  • you want fewer parts to check: no pump lift to match to your drain.

None of the 461 certified portables on the EPA list says whether it has a pump. The seller can tell you.

Questions

What people ask about pumps

Each answer names its source, with its date.

Ask us a question
Do I need a dehumidifier with a pump?

Only when gravity can’t move the water. ENERGY STAR describes the usual ways out: you empty the bucket, or you run a hose to a floor drain or sump. With no drain lower than the unit, a pump pushes the water up and out.

How do I find a model with a pump?

From the maker’s spec sheet, or the seller. The EPA list records capacity, energy, and refrigerant, but not the pump.

EPA list, Oct 15, 2026
How long can the drain hose be?

Short enough to stay out of the way. ENERGY STAR says to place the unit close enough to the floor drain or sump that you don’t need a long, unwieldy hose. Keep hoses away from electrical cords.
