Dehumidifier with a pump: when you need one, and what to ask

A pump matters only when water can’t run down to a drain. The EPA list doesn’t say which models have one.

How we pick

How we pick. Certified portable models rated 45–50 pints a day. That’s the top of the range ENERGY STAR suggests for a wet basement. Each one is sold by a store we link to. One pick per need: no app, a Wi-Fi app, and sold by the brand. Within each need, the lowest yearly energy use wins, then the higher efficiency. The EPA list has no pump field, so a pump isn’t part of the rule. Check it with the seller. Stores never pay for a place.

Questions

What people ask before buying

Do I need a dehumidifier with a pump?

Only when gravity can’t move the water. ENERGY STAR describes the usual ways out. You empty the bucket, which shuts the unit off when it’s full. Or you hook a hose to it and run the hose to a floor drain or sump.

With no drain lower than the unit, a built-in pump pushes the water up and out, for example to a laundry sink. What matters is how high it pushes: the lift, in feet.

Which certified models have a pump?

The EPA list doesn’t say. It has no pump field, and its extra model notes don’t mention a pump for any of the 461 certified portables. A letter in a model number isn’t proof either.

So ask the seller, and get the lift in feet. If it doesn’t reach your drain, the pump doesn’t help.

How long can the drain hose be?

Short enough to stay out of the way. ENERGY STAR says to place the unit close enough to the floor drain or sump that you don’t need a long, unwieldy hose. Keep drain hoses away from electrical cords, and never set up drainage near electrical circuits. The drain planner works out the setup for your space.

What does a 45–50 pint unit cost to run?

Between 438 and 530 kWh a year on the EPA’s estimates, for 156 certified models; 520 at the median. At the U.S. average price, that’s $95 a year, and in Hawaii $250.
