The three setups
Bucket, hose, or pump
What ENERGY STAR says about each route, quoted from its buying guidance. For a pump, its only line is about whole-house units.
The bucket
“Most portable dehumidifiers use a removable plastic bucket and warning lights to indicate when the bucket is full and needs to be emptied.”
When: no drain nearby, and someone to empty it.
A hose
“Some dehumidifiers come with a fitting that allows you to hook a hose directly to the bucket, which can then be directed into a floor drain or sump pump.”
When: a floor drain or sump pit lower than the unit.
A pump
“Most whole-home dehumidifiers are only equipped with a drain, which should be routed to a floor drain or condensate pump during installation.”
When: the water has to go up, to a sink or outside.

Short answers, with where they come from.
How do I drain a dehumidifier through a hose?
Check that the unit has a hose fitting: ENERGY STAR notes that some models let you hook a hose directly to the bucket. Run the hose to a floor drain or sump that sits lower, so the water flows down by itself. If the drain is higher, you need a pump.
ENERGY STAR, Dehumidifiers buying guidance, read Oct 5, 2026Can a dehumidifier drain into a sump pump?
Yes. ENERGY STAR names a sump pump as one of the two places a drain hose can go, with a floor drain. The pit is below the floor, so the water gets there by gravity.
ENERGY STAR, Dehumidifiers buying guidance, read Oct 5, 2026How long can the drain hose be?
ENERGY STAR doesn’t give a number. It advises placing the unit near enough to the drain “to avoid the need for a long and unwieldy hose”. With a pump, ask the seller how high and how far it pushes water.
ENERGY STAR, Dehumidifiers buying guidance, read Oct 5, 2026Which models have a pump?
The EPA list has no pump field, so we can’t say. Check the maker’s spec sheet, or ask the seller for the pump lift in feet. It must be at least the height this planner gives. With a pump or without weighs the two setups.

Most have no bucket, only a drain. ENERGY STAR says it should go to a floor drain or a condensate pump, set up during installation.
