Dehumidifier for mold: the humidity to aim for, and our picks

A dehumidifier doesn’t remove mold. It holds the humidity down, and the EPA says how far: below 60%, ideally 30–50%.

How we pick

How we pick. Certified portable models rated 35–40 pints a day. That’s the top of the range ENERGY STAR suggests for a space with damp spots on walls or floors. Each one is sold by a store we link to. One pick per need: no app, a Wi-Fi app, and sold by the brand. Within each need, the lowest yearly energy use wins, then the higher efficiency. No 35–40 pint model with a Wi-Fi app is sold by a store we link to yet. So that pick is missing. Stores never pay for a place.

Questions

What people ask before buying

Will a dehumidifier get rid of mold?

No. It lowers the humidity mold needs, but mold that’s already growing has to be cleaned up. For a patch under about 10 square feet, roughly 3 ft by 3 ft, the EPA says you can usually do the job yourself.

After a leak, speed counts. When wet materials are dried within 24–48 hours, the EPA says, in most cases mold won’t grow. Spots inside the unit itself? See black mold in a dehumidifier.

What humidity should I set it to?

ENERGY STAR calls 30–50% the optimum for a building and warns that anything above it may promote mold growth. In a cold climate, during the heating season, it suggests 30–40% to keep condensation off the windows. Ideal indoor humidity goes season by season.

Every certified model has a built-in humidistat. Once the room reaches your setting, the unit cycles on and off to hold it.

How do I keep mold from coming back?

Fix the water first. In the EPA’s words, the key to mold control is moisture control. Clean up mold without fixing the water problem, it warns, and the mold will most likely come back.

Then cut moisture at the source, as the EPA advises. Run the bathroom fan when you shower and the kitchen fan when you cook, and vent the clothes dryer outside.

What size for a room with mold?

Go by how damp it is. A space that smells musty now and then gets 20–30 pints a day by the ENERGY STAR table, under 2,000 sq ft. Damp spots on walls or floors make it very damp, at 25–40. Sweating walls or seepage call for 30–50.

The table adds that it’s better to oversize than undersize.

What does it cost to keep it running?

Certified 35–40 pint portables use 378 kWh a year at the median, by the EPA’s estimate for 63 models. At July 2026 prices that’s $69 a year at the U.S. average, from $48 in Louisiana to $181 in Hawaii.

Held at a low humidity, a unit runs longer, so your bill can top the estimate.
