Our read
Who it suits
On the ENERGY STAR table, the Sentinel HD55S suits a wet space under 2,000 sq ft, or a damp one over. Two other brands list models with the same EPA figures, so compare prices.
Capacity suggested for each case, read Oct 5, 2026. ENERGY STAR adds that it’s better to oversize than undersize.
Running cost
Its power bill is close to the norm
A portable lasts 11 years on average, by the DOE’s count. In that time, this model costs $10 more to run in the United States than the median 29–44 pint model. The thriftiest 29–44 pint model, the Deciuu LIBRA-RCS32(Y)-N4-3(B), would save $93 over those years.
The company that files it with the EPA lists the Abestorm Guardian SN55S and BaseAire AirWerx 55S with the same capacity, energy use, and efficiency. Compare their prices and warranties before you choose.
Wi-Fi app
You’ll check it in person
Like 78 other 29–44 pint models out of 87, the Sentinel HD55S has no Wi-Fi app on the EPA list. In a basement you rarely visit, plan to check it in person.
Our sources don’t say whether the Sentinel HD55S has a pump, or how cold it can run. With no drain lower than the unit, the pump lift must reach your sink. Under 65°F, ENERGY STAR says the coils can frost.
Uses 379 kWh a year, 5 kWh over the median of its class.
Its refrigerant is R-32, flagged as lower GWP.Global warming potential 675.
Of the 87 certified 29–44 pint portables, 58 use less energy, and 4 use exactly as much.
At 2.08 liters per kWh, it clears the federal minimum for its class by 30%.The DOE sets 1.60 L/kWh for portables rated over 25 and up to 50 pints a day. Every unit made since June 13, 2019, must meet it.
The largest portable certified under the AlorAir name. Next down is the Helios D35, at 24 pints. That one uses 105 kWh a year less.
On the market since March 2025, newer than 9% of the 29–44 pint models on the list.
Not on the EPA’s Most Efficient list, which names 1 of the 29–44 pint models.
The company that files it also files the Abestorm, Argendon, and BaseAire models with the EPA.
Another brand near this size: the Abestorm Guardian SN55S, at 36 pints and 379 kWh a year. Both cost the same to run in the United States.

A day of nonstop drying means 36.33 pints of water, about 4.5 gallons, for some 8.3 kWh. At the average home electricity price in the United States, the Sentinel HD55S costs $1.51 to run that day.
The EPA’s yearly estimate, 379 kWh, adds up to about 46 days like that. Each extra day at full output costs another $1.51.
Those 36.33 pints come from a DOE test at 65°F and 60% humidity. Cooler air at that humidity gives up less water, so expect fewer pints in a cold basement.
Every day at full output leaves 4.5 gallons to get rid of. Check how the Sentinel HD55S drains, since our sources don’t say.
