Low temperature dehumidifier: below 65°F, what to check

ENERGY STAR® draws the line at 65°F: below it, frost can form on the coils. The EPA list doesn’t say how low each model works.

How we pick

How we pick. Certified portable models rated 35–40 pints a day. That’s the top of the range ENERGY STAR suggests for a very damp basement. Each one is sold by a store we link to. One pick per need: no app, a Wi-Fi app, and sold by the brand. Within each need, the lowest yearly energy use wins, then the higher efficiency. How a model copes with cold isn’t on the EPA list, so it plays no part here. Ask the seller how low each pick works. No 35–40 pint model with a Wi-Fi app is sold by a store we link to yet. So that pick is missing. Stores never pay for a place.

Questions

What people ask before buying

What counts as low temperature for a dehumidifier?

Below 65°F. If a space typically falls under that, ENERGY STAR says you may want a product specified for use at lower temperatures. Under that line, frost can form on the condensing coils.

What happens when the coils frost?

The compressor cycles on and off without removing moisture. ENERGY STAR advises you to switch the unit off and let it thaw before you turn it back on. An anti-frost sensor does the switching off for you when the air drops below a set point.

Are the pints on this site measured in the cold?

At 65°F. Since 2019 the Department of Energy rates capacity at 65°F instead of 80°F, which is why today’s figures run lower than older ones. Nothing on the EPA list says what a model removes below that.

What does it cost to run?

Certified 35–40 pint portables use 340 to 388 kWh a year by the EPA’s estimates, 378 at the median. That’s $69 a year at the U.S. average price, $181 in Hawaii.
