Our read

Who it suits

Rated 50 pints a day, the FHDD5033Y1 is sized for every space in the ENERGY STAR table, wet ones over 2,000 sq ft included. Its running cost is close to the median, so drainage, noise, and price matter more.

The EPA doesn’t list the FHDD5033Y1 as connected. Of the 156 certified 45–50 pint models, 14 are. In a crawl space you rarely open, a connected one saves the trip.

Neither figure is in our sources for the FHDD5033Y1. Without a floor drain below it, a pump has to lift the water to a sink. Basements run cool, and below 65°F, ENERGY STAR says frost can form on the coils.

From the data

Where it stands

  • Uses 520 kWh a year, the median of its class.
  • Its refrigerant is R-32, flagged as lower GWP.Global warming potential 675.
  • Tied for 78th of 156 certified 45–50 pint portables for low energy use.
  • Its efficiency, 2.01 liters per kWh, is 26% above the federal minimum for its capacity class. The DOE sets 1.60 L/kWh for portables rated over 25 and up to 50 pints a day. Every unit made since June 13, 2019, must meet it.
  • Frigidaire’s next size down is the FHDD3534Y1, rated 36 pints. That one uses 141 kWh a year less.
  • Sold since August 2025. Among 45–50 pint models, 28 of 156 came out earlier.
  • Not on the EPA’s Most Efficient list, which names 8 of the 45–50 pint models.
  • The nearest size from another brand is the Insignia NS-DH50WH7, rated 50 pints and 512 kWh a year.In the United States, this one costs $1 a year more to run.

in the United States

Run for a whole day at its rating, the FHDD5033Y1 removes 49.95 pints, about 6.2 gallons, on roughly 11.8 kWh. In the United States, that’s $2.15.

Divide the EPA’s 520 kWh a year by one full day’s use, and you get roughly 44 days. Past that, each day at full output adds $2.15 to the bill.

The DOE test behind those 49.95 pints runs at 65°F and 60% humidity. At the same humidity, a cooler basement gets less water out of the FHDD5033Y1.

Without a hose or a pump, someone has to carry out 6.2 gallons a day. Our sources don’t say whether the FHDD5033Y1 has a bucket, or how much it holds.
