Our read

Who it suits

Rated 32 pints a day, the HME0089 is sized for a wet space under 2,000 sq ft, or a damp one over. It’s one of the cheaper models of its size to run.

Running cost

Cheaper to run than most 29–44 pint models

It uses 31 kWh a year less than the median 29–44 pint model. Over 11 years, the DOE’s average life for a portable, that’s about $62 saved in the United States.

Wi-Fi app

You can check it from your phone

Of the 87 certified 29–44 pint models, only 8 have a Wi-Fi app, and the HME0089 is one. In a basement or crawl space you rarely visit, you read the humidity without going down.

Neither figure is in our sources for the HME0089. Without a floor drain below it, a pump has to lift the water to a sink. Basements run cool, and below 65°F, ENERGY STAR says frost can form on the coils.

From the data

Where it stands

  • At 343 kWh a year, it sits 31 kWh below the middle of its class.
  • Its refrigerant is R-32.
  • Of the 87 certified 29–44 pint portables, 16 use less energy, and 11 use exactly as much.
  • At 2.01 liters per kWh, it clears the federal minimum for its class by 26%.The DOE sets 1.60 L/kWh for portables rated over 25 and up to 50 pints a day. Every unit made since June 13, 2019, must meet it.
  • The largest portable certified under the hOmeLabs name. Next down is the HME0088, at 24 pints. That one uses 52 kWh a year less.
  • On the market since January 2025, newer than 3% of the 29–44 pint models on the list.
  • Not on the EPA’s Most Efficient list, which names 1 of the 29–44 pint models.
  • Another brand near this size: the Honeywell TPFIT32AWK, at 32 pints and 343 kWh a year. Both cost the same to run in the United States.

Our arithmetic

Cost

$1.40

in the United States

Run for a whole day at its rating, the HME0089 removes 32.46 pints, about 4.1 gallons, on roughly 7.6 kWh. In the United States, that’s $1.40.

Divide the EPA’s 343 kWh a year by one full day’s use, and you get roughly 45 days. Past that, each day at full output adds $1.40 to the bill.

The DOE test behind those 32.46 pints runs at 65°F and 60% humidity. At the same humidity, a cooler basement gets less water out of the HME0089.

Without a hose or a pump, someone has to carry out 4.1 gallons a day. Our sources don’t say whether the HME0089 has a bucket, or how much it holds.
