How we pick. Certified portable models rated 30–35 pints a day. That’s the start of the 30+ range ENERGY STAR suggests for a home over 2,000 sq ft that smells musty. Each one is sold by a store we link to. One pick per need: no app, a Wi-Fi app, and sold by the brand. Within each need, the lowest yearly energy use wins, then the higher efficiency. None of the 30–35 pint models is available yet from a brand store we link to. So that pick is missing. Stores never pay for a place.

What people ask before buying
Portable or whole-house?
ENERGY STAR draws the line clearly. A portable dries a single room or space and moves where you need it. A whole-house unit is installed on your air ducts, usually for good, and serves one or more rooms.
It suggests the second for a humid climate and a home with central air, especially when humidity reads above 55% all through the house. The EPA lists 21 certified ducted models. Whole-house vs portable compares them side by side.

Over 2,000 sq ft, the ENERGY STAR table gives open ranges. A home that smells musty now and then needs 30+ pints a day. If it feels damp all the time, 40+. If walls sweat, 50+.
No certified portable goes past 50 pints. A large, wet home is whole-house territory. The 1,500 and 2,000 sq ft guides work through the numbers.

Look for water where it shouldn’t be. The EPA calls condensation on window glass, walls, or pipes a sign of high humidity. A moldy smell with no source in sight can point to hidden mold.
Then measure. A hygrometer reading above 60% is over the EPA’s limit. The ENERGY STAR sizing table reads the same clues, from a musty smell to damp spots and, at worst, sweating walls or seepage.

Unless the air comes out the top, keep it away from walls and furniture so that air moves around it. Close the room’s doors and windows while it runs, and keep it away from dust, like a woodworking corner, which clogs the coils.
Draining with a hose? Put it near the floor drain or sump, and never set up drainage near electrical circuits. Below 65°F, pick a model specified for the cold, as ENERGY STAR suggests.
ENERGY STAR, Dehumidifiers buying guidance, read Oct 5, 2026What are the downsides of a dehumidifier?
It adds to your power bill, by the figure in the next answer, and it warms the air nearby a little, ENERGY STAR notes.
Its water has to go somewhere, so plan on a bucket to empty or a hose to route. The bucket needs cleaning now and then, and so does the filter if it has one. The EPA list gives no noise figure for any of its 482 models, so ask the seller.
ENERGY STAR, Dehumidifiers buying guidance, read Oct 5, 2026 · EPA list, Oct 15, 2026What does it cost to run?
Per portable, certified 30–35 pint models use 343 kWh a year at the EPA median. That’s $63 a year at the U.S. average price. By state, it runs from $44 in Louisiana to $165 in Hawaii.
Whole-house units are compared another way, by the cost of removing 100 pints: see the whole-house guide.
