How we pick

How we pick. Certified portable models rated 30–40 pints a day, the units sold as 30, 32, or 35 pints and up to 40. Each one is sold by a store we link to. One pick per need: no app, a Wi-Fi app, and sold by the brand. Within each need, the lowest yearly energy use wins, then the higher efficiency. Stores never pay for a place.

Questions

What people ask before buying

Who needs a 35-pint dehumidifier?

By the ENERGY STAR table, 35 pints a day fits a very damp or wet space under 2,000 sq ft. Over 2,000 sq ft, it fits a damp space.

For a room that only smells musty now and then, 20–30 pints is enough.

How much does a 35-pint dehumidifier cost to run?

Half of the 84 certified models rated 30–40 pints use less than 374 kWh a year. At July 2026 prices, that comes to $48 in Louisiana, the cheapest state, and $180 in Hawaii.

Is a 50-pint unit a better buy?

Only if the space needs it. The EPA says it’s better to oversize than undersize, but size has a cost. A certified 45–50 pint portable uses 520 kWh a year at the median, against 374 here. The 35 vs 50 pint comparison puts the two sizes side by side.

Is 35 pints enough for a wet basement?

Under 2,000 sq ft, yes, but only just. ENERGY STAR suggests 30–50 pints for a wet space, so 35 sits in the lower half of that range.
