Garage dehumidifier: cold is the catch, and what size

An unheated garage can drop below 65°F, where ENERGY STAR® says frost can form on the coils. So ask how cold a model works before you look at anything else.

How we pick

How we pick. Certified portable models rated 35–40 pints a day. That’s the top of the range ENERGY STAR suggests for a space with damp spots on walls or floor. Each one is sold by a store we link to. One pick per need: no app, a Wi-Fi app, and sold by the brand. Within each need, the lowest yearly energy use wins, then the higher efficiency. The EPA list gives no model’s lowest working temperature, so cold isn’t part of the rule. Check it with the seller. No 35–40 pint model with a Wi-Fi app is sold by a store we link to yet. So that pick is missing. Stores never pay for a place.

Questions

What people ask before buying

Will a dehumidifier work in a cold garage?

Under 65°F, it may struggle. Frost can form on the coils, ENERGY STAR says, and the compressor then cycles on and off without removing moisture. Switch it off and let it defrost before restarting.

Some models have an anti-frost sensor that shuts them off when the air gets too cold. The EPA list doesn’t say which, nor how low each one works. The low temperature guide lists the questions to ask.

What size for a garage?

Measure the floor, length times width, then judge the damp. Under 2,000 sq ft, the ENERGY STAR table gives 20–30 pints a day when the garage smells musty now and then. Damp spots on the walls call for 25–40. A slab that sweats, or water that seeps in, calls for 30–50.

Where should the water go?

To a floor drain, if you have one: a bucket fills up in a space you don’t visit every day. ENERGY STAR asks for a properly grounded outlet, hoses kept away from cords, and no drainage near electrical circuits. The drain planner tells you which setup fits.

What does it cost to run in a garage?

A certified 35–40 pint unit uses 378 kWh a year at the EPA median of 63 models. At the U.S. average price, that’s $69 a year. In Louisiana, the cheapest state, it’s $48.
