Bathroom dehumidifier: fan first, then the right size

The EPA and ENERGY STAR® both start with the vent fan. A dehumidifier is for the bathroom that has none, or that stays damp anyway.

3 picks that fit

How we pick

How we pick. Certified portable models rated 20–25 pints a day. That’s the bottom of the range ENERGY STAR suggests, its smallest size. Each one is sold by a store we link to. One pick per need: no app, EPA Most Efficient, and a Wi-Fi app. Within each need, the lowest yearly energy use wins, then the higher efficiency. Stores never pay for a place.

Questions

What people ask before buying

Do I need a dehumidifier in a bathroom?

Often a fan is enough. The EPA says to run the bathroom fan or open the window when you shower. ENERGY STAR suggests vent fans in bathrooms and kitchens to remove humidity at the source.

A dehumidifier makes sense when there’s no fan, or when the mirror and walls stay wet long after the shower.

What size for a bathroom?

The ENERGY STAR table starts at 20–30 pints a day, for any slightly damp space under 2,000 sq ft. A small bathroom gets the same range as a bigger room.

Smaller certified units exist: 61 portables are rated under 20 pints. They sit below the table’s first row, so they aren’t picks here.

Is it safe to run a dehumidifier in a bathroom?

Follow the maker’s electrical warnings first. ENERGY STAR adds three rules of its own. Use a properly grounded outlet, route hoses away from cords, and never set up drainage near electrical circuits.

What does a small unit cost to run?

Not much. Certified 20–25 pint portables use 285 kWh a year at the EPA median, about $52 a year at the U.S. average. Even in Hawaii, the dearest state, it comes to $137.
